On tour in Asia
This June and July, Seong-Jin Cho continues his expansive recital tour, traveling to venues in Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan. Cho showcases his artistry with two diverse programs, highlighting his “impeccable technique and acute musical sensitivity” (Bachtrack).
The first of these programs reflects nature’s power and beauty, opening with Liszt’s Les Jeux d’eaux à la Villa d’Este, followed by Beethoven’s Sonata No. 15 in D major, Op. 28, commonly known as the Pastoral Sonata, and Bartók’s percussive Im Freien (Outdoors), Sz. 81. The recital closes with Brahms’ last and most expansive piano sonata, Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 5.
This elegant and refreshing program can be heard on June 9 at Singapore’s Esplanade Concert Hall, followed by performances in South Korea at the Seongnam Arts Center on June 15, the Seoul Arts Center on June 17, and the Gimhae Arts and Sports Center on June 21. Cho repeats the program on June 29 at Taiwan’s Tainan Cultural Center before returning to South Korea for a performance at Cheonan Arts Center on July 6.
Cho also continues his celebration of the music of Maurice Ravel, appearing in recital with an all-Ravel program that pulls from his recent double album, Ravel: The Complete Solo Piano Works. The Financial Times praised his artistry, saying, “Cho’s strength is that he keeps such a high standard of accuracy and clarity, down to the exact weighting of every chord even at speed, without sounding clinical or purely a virtuoso… Ravel playing of such perfection of detail does not come round often.”
Cho brings this riveting recital to South Korea, with performances at Arts Center Incheon on June 12, the Seoul Arts Center on June 14, and Daegu Concert House on June 20. He travels to Taiwan for a performance on June 26 at the National Theater and Concert Hall Taipei before returning to South Korea for performances at the Goyang Aram Nuri Arts Center on July 1 and Daejeon Arts Center on July 2.
